Fiber Art Bee

Here is a letter from one of our members, Bev Hilton, with some information on another quilting group in town you may be interested in….

Hi, Modern Quilters.
Great to meet you all [the other night].
FAB (the Fiber Art Bee) meets the third Saturday morning each month at a floating location.  It was established in April of 2007 by Gretchen Brooks and yours truly when we discovered there was no fiber art group in Gainesville.
We explore anything and everything fiber art.  Or original name was the Unlimited Bee, which expresses our viewpoint — no limits on what we explore or who may join.  The only thing we do ask of members is that they belong to one of the existing guilds in town, the American Sewing Guild (, Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild (, or Tree City.  (Modern Quilters didn’t exist when this condition was established.)
We’d be delighted to welcome guests to check us out.  Currently we’re working on a challenge art quilt based on the theme, “Some of my favorite things.”  In November, we brought a bag with items we especially liked — bits of this and that that fiber art people would take a liking to.  We exchanged some of them with one another, then took home our bags with the objective of creating a journal quilt (8 1/2 X 11 or 9 X 12) incorporating at least some of everything contained in our bags.  We photographed the bags so no cheating!  We’ll have them on view at our February meeting.
We’re also working on a collaborative quilt, begun several months ago.  Each month a different person has the quilt and makes additions or modifications to it.  She brings it and hands it off to the next person.  It will be done when it’s done!
We’ve done batik with a nationally-known batik artist, marbling, silk painting, fabric dyeing, needle felting, made fabric beads, wire wrapped rocks, done beaded amulet bags, tortured Tyvek . . .  the list goes on . . .  We’ve done field trips, too.  We do have a lot of fun!
Anyone interested should contact me at (352) 373-7791 or write me at Bevhilton1 {at} aol {dot} com   We’d be pleased to have adventurous souls join us for a visit.  Our next meeting is Saturday, January 15th.
Also, if you’d like to take a peek at my one-woman exhibition at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville, get in touch and we’ll make arrangements.  It will be up for another week or two only.
